Basic troubleshooting

Here are a couple of tips and tricks if you are experiencing problems when connecting to the UiO wireless network.

The computer cannot find the wireless network

Make sure that the network interface controller (NIC) is not deactivated. On laptops there is often a button or a key combination you have to use to turn the NIC off or on. If you do not know how to do this on your computer, talk to your local IT staff or contact the supplier.

Connecting to eduroam

  • Is the password and/or username valid?
    • Verify by logging in to webmail.uio.no.
    • If your username is working on the webmail, but not on uioguest, you have been blocked from the wireless network. In case this happens, contact Houston.
  • Delete the wireless profile and make a new one:
  • If you are connected, but the Internet is not working: Make sure that you do not have a static IP adress or wrong DNS. Contact your local IT or Houston if you need to know how to check this.
  • Make sure that the wireless works by connecting to "uioguest".

Bad service / unstable network

  • Try locking the wireless card by onlu using 802.11g, 802.11a or 802.11n.
  • Ask the local IT staff or student IT.
  • Turn down "roaming aggressiveness".
  • Contact your local IT or Houston for help if needed.

Windows

  • Update the wireless drivers
  • How can i find out which driver version is in use?
  • Update the drivers for the Intel wireless card here.
  • If you do not have an Intel card, go to your suppliers web page and look for driver updates.
  • Check and see if you have software that can affect the wireless connection. Some laptops come with the suppliers management software. This may cause problems when connecting to the UiO network. If you do have this kind of software, deactivate it and let the operative system on your computer manage the connection.
  • Update the drivers for bluetooth, or deactivate bluetooth. Active bluetooth can often interefere with the wireless signals.

Mac

  • Delete the wireless network profile and create a new one.
  • Delete old certificates from radius1.uio.no and radius2.uio.no.

Linux

  • If you are using NetworkManager to connect, look in the /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log to see if anything shows up. If you are using wpa_supplicant manually, try using wpa_supplicant with -DD.
  • NB! Deactivate the wireless on NetworkManager if you are using wpa_supplicant manually, or else you will be running to versions at the same time.

If you are still experiencing problems, contant your local IT staff or Houston for further troubleshooting.
