Programme structure

Programme structure for students attending this study programme from fall 2018

Programme structure 2017

We offer two types of structures:

A) A one-year course program with a full-length, one-year thesis, and

B) 1 1/2 year course program, with a shorter thesis (30 ECTS = one semester)

The first (A) is the normal structure for students specializing in meteorology or oceanography during the bachelor’s study. The second program (B) is designed especially for national and international students with a bachelor’s degree in other geoscience specializations than those offered in the Department for Geosciences at the University of Oslo.

The master's program is composed of compulsory courses and courses which can be chosen from a pool of courses given at the Department of Geosciences, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, at the University of Oslo.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

There are compulsory HSE courses at the beginning of the first semester.

In addition, from autumn 2015 HMS0505 – Electricity Safety is required for attending some courses, this is specified in the course descriptions.

You are exempted from these course requirements if you have already completed the equivalent HSE courses in relation to a bachelor programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO.

For further information se website for transitional arrangements between old and new HSE courses.

In the following we describe the possibilities for master’s study in meteorology and oceanography. The program has a theoretical part (courses) and a thesis. The course selection depends on the thesis, as the courses provide the necessary theory and methodology for the thesis work. The student normally selects either meteorology or oceanography, although a combination of the two fields is also possible.

* Students without GEF3450 – Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (continued) or similar in the bachelor degree have to take GEF4450 - Geophysical Fluid Dynamics in the first semester at the MSc programme. Students with GEF3450 choose a complementary MSc course instead.

Complementary MSc courses can be selected from a range of courses offered at the Department of Geosciences as well as from other departments at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In addition courses from other Norwegian and foreign universities can be accepted, e.g. the University Centre in Svalbard - UNIS. The student will make the selection in co-operation with her/his supervisor or the coordinator of the study discipline. The course choice should be done at the earliest possible stage.

Students who wish to write a thesis in polar meteorology or oceanography are encouraged to spend their 2. semester at UNIS. These students may write a thesis with a scientist at UNIS, while having a member of staff in the department in Oslo as an internal advisor.

The following courses are currently taught. All courses will be taught in English, unless there are only Norwegian speaking students attending the courses.

Recognition of Master courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Hand in the application to the Studies administration.
