Course content

MAT1100U is a continuation of high school calculus, but goes deeper into the theoretical foundations and develops the methods further in order to deal with more complicated cases. The course also contains introductions to complex numbers, vectors and matrices, and continuity and differentiability of functions of several variables and?forms the basis for MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course

  • you are familiar with the complex numbers and can calculate with them on Cartesian and polar form
  • you are familiar with the Completeness Principle for the real numbers and know how it is used in creating the theory of functions of one variable
  • you know how to define conituity, limits, derivatives, and integrals precisely, and can compute limits, derivatives, and integrals of functions of one variable
  • you are familiar with vectors and matrices and can use them for simple calculations
  • you know what functions of several variables are, can determine whether they are continuous and differentiable, and can compute and interpret directional derivatives and partial derivatives
  • you can use the theory in the course to solve modeling problems, especially problems concerning integration, optimization, and related rates.

This course is exclusive for students in upper secondary school who fulfill certain requirements. See the Norwegian website for more information.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course builds on the most advanced mathematics courses from upper secondary school.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

3 hours of lectures once per week throughout the autumn and spring semester. The teaching is held after regular school hours and must be attended in order to complete the course. There is no teaching in the autumn and winter holidays.

Examination

Midterm exam which counts 1/3 towards the final grade.

Final written exam which counts 2/3 towards the final grade.?

This course has?2?mandatory assignments?that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

The midterm exam is usually held the week before Christmas and the final exam is usually?held in the end of April.?Both exams are compulsory and have to be taken in the same academic year.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: MAT1100 – Calculus

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
