Anyone can create a WebID user by registering in the new WebID service. In order to use a WebID user in a service, a moderator must add the user as a member of a WebID group. All members of a group can log onto the service the group has access to. Note that WebID users cannot access services other than those where a group they is a member of, has been given access. Services like e-mail and wireless network access are not supported.
A WebID user consists of the following information:
- A unique username. The username will be the same as the e-mail address used to register. The user must choose a name, but it cannot be changed later without creating a new user.
- A password. The user must choose a password.
- An e-mail address at which the user can be contacted.
- The user's choice of first name and last name. Note that no checks are made that the name is correct. The user is however encouraged to use their own name to make administration easier.
Automatic deletion of WebID users
The database of all WebID users is kept up to date by means of all users logging on to webid.uio.no at least once a year. If the user has not logged on in the past year it will be deleted.
All WebID users will be warned in good time by e-mail before the year has elapsed.
Note that when a WebID user is deleted, all information about the user is lost and cannot be restored. If a person has forgotten to renew his or her user, a completely new WebID user must be created.
