I am still on sick-leave until next week.

Tomorrow, during the session 12:15-14:00, work on Project 2-B now uploaded to the course page. You are welcome to deliver  your results by Monday 14:15, the latest, next week, if you want me to correct them and give feed-back. Feel free to work together. A colleague will open the door to the lecture room for you.

We will use the last 2 lectures next week to talk about outstanding questions and future prospects, some of which have been tackled during the CERN visit.

I could unfortunately not give you back project 2 last week (except the lucky ones who delivered them electronically). You will get them next week.

All 16 delivered projects are approved.

Will be given back on Thursday 16.05.

Reminder: as homework go through the material uploaded to the indico page of the CERN visit. Some of the material treated is part of the last chapter: Outstanding questions and future prospects.

Exercise session Chapter 7 on Monday may 13th.

Then on Thursday May 16th we start Chapter 9.

Some of the material shown during the CERN visit is available here: https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=235499. I encourage all students to go through it

Will take place on Thursday 25th April 10:15-12:00.

Publisert 23. apr. 2013 14:38

On Monday 22nd April we went through project 1. Pity that some people did not show up! Let me know where and when you want have your copy back.

Deadline May 2nd at 14:15.

We will have a session on Monday April 22nd to go through some parts of the compulsory set of exercises.

We have finished Chapter 6 - Weak interactions. Work out the corresponding exercises!

Publisert 15. apr. 2013 17:02

All delivered projects 1 are now acknowledged. Corrected copies will be returned next Thursday or Monday. Please, go through the comments before we set up a discussion session.

As wished by many students, the next project 2 will be distributed in part 2 parts: Part(A) and Part (B). The sum of the 2 parts will be similar in length to project 1.

I remind that in order to qualify for the final exam, students must deliver both projects 1 and 2 (A+B). Students who do not get the next project acknowledged will be asked to do some additional work.

Monday 15.4: exercise session chapter 2.

Thursday 18.4: lecture, finish chapter 6 - weak interactions.

Today, I have briefly mentioned some very important results obtained by the Planck satellite experiment (announced live 2 weeks ago) and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (announced live yesterday). Links can be found on the course web site.

We, then had an exercise session - ready with Chapter 5. I got some good and interesting questions that I have answered.

Next week: On Monday I will continue with Weak interactions - Chapter 6.

Publisert 22. mars 2013 09:27

We finished chapter 5 - strong interactions - and started chapter 6 - weak interactions - on March 21.

We also went through a mid-term evaluation of the course. Thanks for the useful and constructive comments already received. An email is sent to you to give further feedback.

On Monday March 25th we will have an exercise session. This concerns chapter 2 and 5.

After Easter I will finish Chapter 6, run a corresponding exercise session. Once done with Chapter 7 (Models and Theories of Nuclear physics) I will distribute a second compulsory project.

Publisert 8. mars 2013 13:30

We have now finished finished Nuclear Phenomenology chapter. We also had a short session where questions were answered on project 1 as well as chapter 2 exercises.

Next week (Monday 11 and Thursday 14) will be devoted to Strong Interactions as well as to answering questions on Exercises (chapter 2 and project 1).

The first assignment (project) is posted on the course web site: http://folk.uio.no/farido/fys3510/fys3510-2013-pb1.pdf . To be delivered by March 14th at 10:15.

For your information. We have now finished "Particle Phenomenology" where we have introduced many concepts, such as lepton and baryon numbers, isospin and other quark flavour quantum numbers. We have also solved all the assigned exercises. Today we started "Nuclear phenomenology", derived the Rutherford cross section formula (Appendix C) and extended the latter to include spin and target recoil. In the next lecture we will introduce form factors, charge distribution and size of nuclei, ...

Start solving problems related to Appendix 3 and Chapter 2.

Some updates about the course and CERN visit

  • We finished the first part of Chapter 3 related to leptons. We went through properties of charged leptons and neutrinos: lepton quantum number and masses. We discussed some details related to neutrino oscillations: formalism, atmospheric & solar neutrinos, long base-line experiments at accelerators and reactors, neutrino mixing matrix. It is time to solve the problems related to that part of chapter 3.

  • On Thursday this week, we tackle quarks and hadrons; to be finished, including problems, next week.

  • If you have questions concerning problems in chapter 1 and appendix B, let me know which ones we should look at.

  • CERN visit: the link to the agenda is now available. More information will be added in the near future. The first day is already fully booked. IMPORTANT REMINDER: we try to cover flig...

The final oral exam will take place on Monday June 10 and Tuesday June 11. Up to now 17 students have confirmed.

The CERN visit is now fixed: May 5 (travel day) to May 8 (late evening travel). 17 students (15 from FYS3510 and 2 from FYS4560) have shown interest. There is still room for a few more students. So don't hesitate too long ... many details have to be dealt with, so the earlier the better.

Important message concerning the course: As some of you have expressed (thank you very much), new concepts have been introduced in chapter 1, especially for the students who did not have enough background in quantum physics and/or special relativity.

First of all, the various concepts will be used and further developed later in the course, such that you will have the opportunity to grasp and master them.

Second, I count on you to ask questions (either during the lecture or privately). In fact I should not complain as I have been approached by 10 different people up to now. At the beginning of the last lecture we spent 15 minutes or so discussing the invariant mass (vs number of events or cross-section). I will continue doing so in the future.

Third, the exercises at the end of the lectures are meant to practice and work with those concepts. Among others C,P,T, Feynman diagrams, range of interactions, units, ... will be dealt with in next week's session ab...

Plans for next week (February 4 and 7): There will be 2 exercise sessions by B?rge Gjelsten. This includes chapter 1 and appendix B (some relativistic kinematics will first be introduced). It is recommended that students try to solve at least the set of exercises proposed. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Status: Started chapter 3 Particle phenomenology. Introduced lepton families and lepton numbers; discovery of neutrinos and introduction of neutrino oscillations; discussed atmospheric neutrinos and terrestrial (long baseline experiments) that reproduced the atmospheric neutrino oscillation results. Students not present should go through the slides and calculate the oscillation probability in the simple case of 2 neutrino generations. On Monday 11th February we proceed with solar neutrinos, finish the lepton part before we continue with the hadron/quark part.

The lectures will continue to take place Monday 14:15-16:00 and Thursday 10:15-12:00.

I invite you to follow the link http://folk.uio.no/farido/fys3510-13.html and remind you about the colour coding: Green=done; Yellow=being done; Red= Action required.

On Thursday 24.01 we will finish Chapter 1 (Basic concepts). We went through history, relativity and antiparticles and space-time symmetries (C,P,T).

Next week (28.1 and 31.1), we will proceed with Chapter 3(Particle phenomenology). Chapter 2 (Nuclear phenomenology) will follow later.

Then (4.2 and 7.2) there will be exercise sessions (chapter 1) as well as Appendix B (relativistic kinematics and exercises).
