STK1100 – Probability and Statistical Modelling
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course gives a basic introduction to probability and the use of probability models to describe random variables and stochastic processes. The course also gives an introduction to statistical inference, that is how to extract information from data. The course gives a good background for STK1110 – Statistical Methods and Data Analysis
Learning outcome
After having completed the course
- you know about the concept of probability and master the basic rules of probability
- you know about random variables, and are able to find expectation, variance, covariance and moment generating functions
- you know about the most common univariate probability models, and have seen examples of bivariate models
- are you able to do computations with univariate and bivariate distributions and to determine conditional distributions
- you know about the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem
- you know methods for estimation and construction of confidence intervals in some simple situations
- you know about stochastic simulation and bootstrapping.
