STK3405 – Introduction to Risk and Reliability Analysis

Course content

STK3405 provides the foundation of probability theory needed to compute the reliability of a system, i.e., the probability that a system is functioning, when the reliabilities of the components which the system is composed of are known. Examples of systems are energy systems and networks. The course will also cover various examples of use of risk analysis for industrial applications. The material is illustrated by different simulation techniques. STK3405 is an introduction to more advanced studies, but is also suitable as a support course to studies in other fields and as further education for realists and engineers.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you:

  • know what coherent systems are, and can represent such systems by paths and cuts
  • can compute the reliability for systems of components
  • know what discrete event simulation is, and can apply different simulation techniques to do computations related to risk- and reliability analysis
  • can compute the reliability importance of components
  • can perform a risk- and reliability analysis in various practical situations.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)

  • Chemistry (1+2)

  • Biology (1+2)

  • Information technology (1+2)

  • Geosciences (1+2)

  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching
