Remote Desktop from Mac

Important: Remote Desktop uses two-factor authentication, but you won't be prompted for it on the screen when you log in. When you log in to Remote Desktop, you must check the phone to confirm the login in Microsoft Authenticator (with Remote Desktop you cannot confirm login with anything other than Authenticator).



NOTE: The solution can only be used to reach Windows computers from Mac. We do not have any supported solutions for using Remote Desktop for Macs.

Installation

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop is installed from the Managed Software Center on the operated Macs.
  • For privately owned Macs, the program is installed from the App Store

Create a connection file

To help you with the connection, we have made a web page where you can create a connection file for the Remote Desktop connection. This is how you use it:

  1. Go to the page for creating a connection file.
  2. Fill in the name of your office computer in the field Navn p? maskin du vil koble til. It should be written as machinename.clients.uio.no. NOTE! This is the name of the computer you wish to connect to – a computer at the UiO – not the computer connected from.   
    • If you do not know the name of your office computer, please contact IT Help.
    • If you are preparing while at your office computer, you can go to the page where you create a connection file and click the Denne maskinen button. You'll then see the name of your computer. Make a note of the name, and use it when creating a connection file from your home computer or laptop.
  3. Enter your user name in the field Brukernavn.
  4. Select a screen resolution. We recommend Fullscreen.

  5. Click the Generer fil button. Save the file to the desktop or another location where you are sure you can easily access it. The file itself is called "name-of-your-computer.clients.uio.no.rdp" and can be found the in the Downloads folder.

How to use Microsoft Remote Desktop

  1. Locate the file. From now on, this file is your shortcut to remote connections to the UiO computer. We recommend you move it from the Downloads folder to Desktop folder.
  2. The next time you wish to use your office computer remotely, simply double-click the connection file. 
  3. A window with the text Connecting opens, and after a while you'll be asked for your password. Make sure that it is your user name in the dialouge, and that it is written with uio/ in front of it. Enter your UiO password, and click OK. 
  4. The connection requires two-factor authentication and will therefore hang on initiates Remote Connection, until you have confirmed the login with Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone.
