FARM5170 – Drugs for treatment of degenerative and life style diseases
Course description
Course content
The course is based on lower level pharmacology courses and will provide in-depth understanding of drug treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, degenerative bone diseases (osteoporosis, arthrosis), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type 2 diabetes and obesity. The course will provide advanced knowledge on current drug treatments and possible future drug treatments for various patient groups, including children and elderly. The course also includes "biological" drugs, polypharmaceuticals, diagnostics, new biomarkers, and societal aspects of pharmaceuticals such as pharmacoeconomics and use of individual health registries and databases (big data) for pharmacoepidemiological studies.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you have in depth knowledge about pathophysiology of the mentioned disease groups / conditions.
- you have broad knowledge and can communicate present drug therapy and possible future drug treatments for health professionals and different patient groups, both for children and elderly.
- you have knowledge of diagnostic methods and identification of new biomarkers to identify preventative and therapeutic measures and to monitor the effect of various medical interventions.
- you can identify problems related to the use of several drugs at the same time (polypharmacy) such as drug interactions.
- you can appraise important societal aspects of drug treatments including efficacy and safety at the individual and community level, with a focus on both children and the elderly, as well as drug priorities in the health service.
