Due to illness, Nils is only partially available in his office (better by mail). As supplementary oracle on Markov chains, Tore Schweder is available.
The problems for the seminar on Wednesday 25 November are now available on the ECON5150 webpage. I am sorry for the delay, but the administration program for this website did not function correctly during the weekend. I have also posted the exam problems from 2007 and 2008. Arne Str?m
The exam problems from 2005 and 2006 are now available, together with answers to the 2005 problems. More is under way.
The problems for the seminar on Wednesday 18 November are now available. You will need to look at the simple version of the Maximum Theorem (Thm. 13.4.1 in FMEA or Thm. 7.2.8 in MA II). You should also try to read about convex sets in Section 13.5 in FMEA or Section 7.4 in MA II. Arne Str?m
- A consolidated solution note for the Markov chains part of the course is now available.
- For your reference, though not exam relevant: the property of a stationary distribution as mean occupation time -- even when it is not a limiting distribution -- is the so-called Cesàro summability . If this is a term you you think you might have seen outside the realm of mathematics, you may actually be right .

Problems for November 4th now available (update: and also solutions to this week.)
There will (probably!) also be problems in topology for November 4th.
I am a bit delayed posting new problems. However, for problem IV.1.12 (the one I messed up during the seminar, sorry again for that), I will re-assign it: prove in detail the case n=2, and notice what identities you had to show for this case. Then use these identities for induction on P^n or Q^n. (Both ways work, actually.)
- No lecture nor seminar week 42.
- Seminar Wednesday 21st (week 43). Problem set posted.
In the lecture plan dated 20 August the day for the examination was given as Wednesday 14 December, but the correct date is Monday 14 December. The corrected lecture plan is dated 07.09.2009. Arne Str?m
- There is no seminar Wednesday 2nd. The exact seminar schedule will be discussed with you.
- On the "neutrally stable" thing: Works if b=0 (and |a|=1), but not for other b.
- Entertainment: an animation of how the logistic map depends upon the parameter
- Nils Framstad
As a gentle warmup before the serious work starts I suggest you do the problems 1.6.1 and 1.6.5 from the textbook (FMEA, 2nd ed.). If you have the 1st edition of FMEA, the problem numbers are 1.7.1 and 1.7.4. And if you get your linear algebra stuff from the Norwegian book, the corresponding problems are 10.4.1 and 10.3.5. Solutions of the problems will be posted on this page some time next week.
The lecture plan originally posted on this page contained some unfortunate errors, so make sure that you have the corrected version, dated 20.08.2009.
