Getting started with TSD.

To apply for access to a TSD project you have to log in through ID-porten.

Use of TSD is done through membership in a TSD project. A TSD user account is created for you through applying for access to the project and identifying yourself through ID-porten, by means of BankID. For people whom we are not able to authenticate with ID-porten — e.g. those without a Norwegian national identity number — there is a separate procedure described below.

Software requirements for using TSD

VMware Horizon client

To use TSD, you can use VMWare's Horizon Web client but it is highly recommended to install the VMWare Horizon client for your operating system on your computer.

Note: there are known issues when using Linux with the Web client:

  1. On Mac OS, the keyboard layouts of your client and the Linux desktop aren't synchronized.
  2. There are performance issues compared to when using the VMware Horizon client for the operating system instead.

On a computer not managed by UiO

If you are not associated with the UiO, download and install the VMware Horizon client:

  1. Go to https://view.tsd.usit.no.
  2. Choose Install VMware Horizon Client: VMware View Horizon front page
  3. Locate the downloadable installation that pertains to your computer operating system: List of downloadable software at VMware's
  4. Download the software client, e.g if you're on Windows: The Windows client installation in the list
  5. Run the installer and follow the instructions. You may need administrative rights on your operating system in order to install the software.
  6. When the installation is complete, you may start VMware Horizon Client.
  7. Click the + Add Server icon and type view.tsd.usit.no.
  8. Using the added server, you may log in to use virtual TSD desktops, using your TSD username and password. Next time you open the client, the added server will already be in the list.

On a computer managed by UiO

  1. Ask your local IT department to install the VMware client for you from the Application Catalog (SCCM).
  2. Follow steps 6-8 in the instructions above.

OTP application for your smartphone

OTP, a method of automatic generation of a periodically changing code tied to a person through a personal device (e.g. a smartphone), is leveraged by TSD to give us additional assurance during verification of your identity, as part of what is called MFA. OTP is required to use TSD, for the most part.

To set up OTP for your use of TSD, install your preferred OTP application, e.g. Google Authenticator, on your personal device, e.g. your smartphone.

Getting access to a project

To apply for access to a TSD project you either need access to an other TSD project or have a Norwegian electronic ID.

You also require the project code of the project you want to apply for. The project code starts with the letter p followed by a number, e.g. p11. You get this code from the PI of the TSD project you want to apply for.

Visit TSD Self Service and select Application: Project membership. You can log in with ID-porten or with your user credentials of an existing TSD project.

If the PI approves your application, you will receive an email with instructions of how how to set up your password and OTP. If the PI rejects your application, you will not receive an email.

Applicants without a Norwegian electronic ID cannot apply for membership themselves. A project administrator must schedule a meeting with the future user, which we strongly recommend done using some secure communications channel:

  1. Using the Invite foreign user feature of the Self Service, a project administrator requests that an invitation e-mail be sent to the future user. The e-mail contains a link that the future user must follow. Note: the invitation link expires 3 hours after the e-mail is sent.
  2. During the (secure) meeting or phone call, the project administrator shared with the future user the secret string that was generated along with the invitation e-mail.
  3. The future user follows the link received via e-mail and, landing on Self Service, type in the secret string and their TSD user account is created.
  4. After creating the user account, the new user sets up their password and generates a QR code for their preferred OTP application (e.g. the Google Authenticator).
  5. Optionally, the project administrator grants them access to one or more Microsoft Windows virtual machines (VMs) of the project.

Receiving your initial login credentials

You will now have received an e-mail with information about your TSD account and how to start using it. Included are your TSD username for the project, along with corresponding password and OTP setup code.

If you are already a member of a TSD project and have gotten access to another one, you are forced to set a new password as per the instructions provided. As your TSD password is shared between all your TSD user accounts, from this point onward your new password will apply to all of them. Note that you do not need to get a new QR code for your OTP when you get access to another TSD project.

Access to Microsoft Windows in your project

Access to Windows virtual machines (VMs) by project members is granted and managed by administrator(s) of the project.

Get OTP QR code

Return to the Self Service to both retrieve a QR code to use with your preferred OTP application (e.g. the Google Authenticator), and to set a password for your account. See also Two-factor Authentication in TSD.
