Sometimes accidents happen, and you delete a document you didn't mean to delete, or you lose a file or document for other reasons.

The document was stored in OneDrive

The document was stored in Teams

I have left UiO and no longer have access to OneDrive and Teams

The document was on my home directory (M: drive or $ HOME)

Good! If the file you are looking for was stored in your home directory, there is a good chance that the IT department has a backup. It depends a bit on how long the file was there before it disappeared. If your home directory is on one of the central 'NetApp servers'?, you can often recover the file yourself using the 'snapshot' technique.

  1. Try the “snapshot”-technique first
  2. If that does not work or if you run into problems, send an email to restore@usit.uio.no with a detailed description of the file’s name and where it was stored.

The document was on the hard drive on my office computer, or on my laptop

There is no set backup routine for office computers and laptops. It can be a real challenge to get files from hard drives on computers. Contact your local IT staff for help. A good tip is to save your documents to OneDrive or GoogleDrive, or your home directory, and not on the hard drives on other computers. Files on OneDrive and Google Drive are kept in the cloud, so they are not affected if you lose your computer or it stops working.

The document was a shared volume area for the department / course / research group

Good! The IT department usually backs up such shared file areas, and an email to restore@usit.uio.no will, in most cases, help you recover the file. Many shared areas also use the 'snapshot' technique, so you might want to try that first.

The document was on the web / was a website

The IT department usually backs up all websites/documents hosted on the web.

  1. If your document was in Vortex, contact vortex-hjelp@usit.uio.no to retrieve a previous version of the document.
  2. If the document was on a UiO-owned website that is not in Vortex, send an email to restore@usit.uio.no.
