Co-hosting

For larger meetings and lectures it might be handy to share your hosting privileges with another user. By using the co-host feature you can allow another user to manage the administrative side of the meeting, such as unmuting speakers, admitting participants from the waiting room and more. Only the host and the co-hosts in a meeting may share their screen, so if a participant ask to share screen, you need to appoint him/her to co-host.

How can a co-host help?

A co-hosts can assist with administrative tasks, such as muting or unmuting participants, starting or stopping a participant's video, letting participants in from the waiting room, managing the participants or creating polls. Co-hosts can also let participants in from waiting rooms.

There is no limitation on the number of co-hosts you can have in a meeting.

NOTE: Participants who plan to share a screen / show presentation during the meeting must be co-hosts.

Differences between a co-host an an alternative host

A co-host is set during the meeting by the host, while an alternative host is planned in advance and must be set in the scheduling of the meeting. An alternative host is also able to start meetings on the hosts behalf.

What a co-host cannot do

Co-hosts do not have access to the following controls as they are only available as host controls in a meeting:

  • End meeting for all participants
  • Make another participant a co-host
  • Start breakout rooms or move participants from one breakout room to another
  • Co-hosts also cannot start a meeting. If a host needs someone else to be able to start the meeting, they can assign an alternative host. See Zoom's documentation on alternative hosts.

Assigning a co-host

There are two ways that you can make a user a co-host.

  • In the meeting, you can hover over the user's video, click on the three dots and choose Make Co-Host.
  • Alternatively, you can make another participant a co-host through the Participants window:
    • Click on Manage Participants in the meeting controls at the bottom of the Zoom window.
    • Hover over the name of the participant who is going to be a co-host, and choose More.
    • Click Make Co-Host.
