First time setup of Educloud Research

You need to be able to log in with ID-porten to follow the steps below. If you do not have ID-porten, please contact us at ec-contact@uio.no

Step 1a: Register a new project (for administrators)

Before you can use Educloud, you have to set up (or join) a project.

Currently, it is only possible for people with a norwegian ID-number to apply for a project.

  1. Go to research.educloud.no/register
  2. Select Request a new project
  3. Log in via ID-porten
  4. Fill out the form
    • Note: Please make sure to fill in you work-related email address, not a personal one
    • The form is only available in Norwegian. Please contact support for further help.
    • The form is signed via Posten Signering upon completion. Note that signing is a requirement.
    • We evaluate your application and create a project. When everything is ready, you will receive a welcome email with information on how to get started.

Note: All Educloud projects gain access to the high-performance computing cluster Fox automatically. For those who only want access to Fox, and no other Educloud services, it is possible to apply for membership in the project ec12. This option is mainly directed at UiO users, but users outside of UiO can also apply to ec12 should they want to test Fox before getting their own project.

Step 1b: Apply for membership in a project (for everyone else)

The following steps only apply for people who want to join an already created project.

You must register for a specific project in order to gain access to Educloud resources (see the guided steps below). UiO user who only want access to Fox, the general-purpose HPC cluster, can apply for access to the Fox test project ec12

If you do not have ID-porten

To add international users who do not have Norwegian e-ID, the process requires the project admin to schedule a video or phone call with the new user.

  1. The project admin requests a invitation link being sent to the foreign user: Educloud Self sertvice. The link requires a secret string, and will expire after 3 hours.
  2. The project admin gives the secret string to the new user via video or phone call with the project admin.
  3. The new user follows the link, creates the user, set password and generates qr-code for authenticator.
  4. The project admin gives access to Windows machines after the new user is created.

For questions regarding user registration, please email ec-contact@usit-uio.no

Step 3: Setup two factor authentication

You need to setup two-factor authentication in Educloud before you can log in.

First you need an authenticator app on your mobile device, for generating one-time codes. There are many such apps, but we recommend using Microsoft Authenticator.

In order to get the one-time codes for logging in to Educloud Research, you need to set up a connection between the authenticator app and Educloud Research. This is done by scanning a QR code that you get from the latter.

  1. Go to research.educloud.no/ via PC or tablet
  2. Choose Need a new one-time code? Image may contain: Font, Rectangle, Parallel, Screenshot.
  3. Log in through ID-porten
  4. Select Generate new QR-code. QR-code you get after you select "Generate a new QR-code"
  5. Open Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device
    • If you have not done this before, select Get started
    • If you have already used this authenticator app, click on the plus icon to add a new connection/two-factor code.
  6. Choose Scan a QR code. The camera on your phone should now open.
  7. Scan the QR-code from your PC/tablet.
    • The two-factor code for Educloud Research will now be added to the bottom of the list in your autenticator app (not necessarily with that exact name).
    • The autenticator app will generate one-time codes every 30 seconds.

Step 4: Log in to Educloud with VMWare Horizon

Note that you need to have your Educloud username, password and one-time code ready in order to log in. This includes setting up two-factor authorization for Educloud, see above steps.
  1. Open VMWare Horizon on your machine
  2. The first time you run VMware Horizon Client for Educloud you need to connect to UiO's server. Click Add server

    "Add server" in VMWare Horizon

  3. Enter view.educloud.no  into the text field in the pop up window and click Connect

Textbox in VMWare where you are asked for "Name of Connection Server"
