You need to be able to log in with ID-porten to follow the steps below. If you do not have ID-porten, please contact your project administrator.
Step 1a: Register a new project (for administrators)
Before you can use Educloud, you have to set up (or join) a project.
Currently, it is only possible to apply for a project if you have a Norwegian ID number (often referred to as a birth number).
- Go to the self service portal (selfservice.educloud.no).
- Under Applications, click on New project
- Then sign in with ID-porten
- Fill out the form.
- Note: Please use your work email address in the application, not a personal email.
- The form is currently only available in Norwegian. Please contact us for questions regarding this.
- Once the form is completed, it must be signed via Posten Signering for the application to be submitted.
We will evaluate your application and create the project. Once everything is ready, you will receive an email with information on how to get started.
Note: All Educloud projects automatically gain access to the high-performance computing cluster Fox. Users who wish only to access Fox, and not other Educloud services, can apply for membership in project ec12. This offer is primarily aimed at UiO users, but users from other institutions may apply if they want to test Fox before creating their own Educloud project.
Step 1b: Apply for membership in a project (for everyone else)
The following steps only apply for people who want to join an already created project.
You must register for a specific project in order to gain access to Educloud resources (see the guided steps below). UiO user who only want access to Fox, the general-purpose HPC cluster, can apply for access to the Fox test project ec12.
If you don't have access to ID-porten
For project administrators; please see the user manual for international applications.
Note: To add users without access to ID-porten, a project administrator must have a video or phone call with the new user.
The project administrator does the following:
- Go to Foreign User Administration.
- Click on the Invite foreign users link.
- Then click on Invite international user under Project administration.
- Fill out information on the user and click Send invitation.
- Share the password (secret string) with the user via a video or phone call
Note! The link sent to the user is valid for 3 hours and requires a password.
When the user receives the link, do the following:
- Open the link received.
- Create a user and set a password.
- Then generate a QR code for One Time Password (OTP).
Finally (project administrator):
- Once the user is created, the project administrator grants access to Windows machines via the self service portal (selfservice.educloud.no).
If you have any questions, please email ec-contact@usit.uio.no.
If you have ID-porten
- Go to the self service portal (selfservice.educloud.no).
- Under Applications, click on Project membership.
- Select Log in with ID-porten.
- Sign in using your preferred ID-porten method.
- Enter the project number for the project you want access to under Project code, and fill in your name and email.
- Confirm that the provided ID number is your national ID number (also referred to as birth number) by checking the box next to I confirm that this is my national ID.
- Finally, click on Submit membership application to submit your application.
After you have submitted the membership application, an administrator in the project must approve your application before you gain access. It is the project's administrators who approves membership applications, not Educloud. Therefore, if you need your application to be approved, please contact the administrators of the relevant project.
Step 2: Change your password
- Go to the self service portal (selfservice.educloud.no).
- Under Your Personal Data, click Password.
- Sign in with Educloud username, password, and OTP or ID-porten.
- If you have forgotten your Educloud password and cannot sign in via ID-porten, please contact the project administrator to reset your password.
- Choose a new password that meets the password strength requirements and re-enter it to confirm.
- Finally, click on Set password.
Step 3: Setup two-factor authentication
You need to set up two-factor authentication in Educloud before you can log in.
Before you start, you need an authentication app on your mobile that generates one-time codes. There are many such apps, but we recommend Microsoft Authenticator.
- Download and install Microsoft Authenticator for your mobile phone. Download from the App Store (iPhone) or from Google Play (Android)
- Download and install Google Authenticator for your mobile phone. Download from the App Store (iPhone) or from Google Play (Android)
To access two-factor authentication for signing in to Educloud, you must set up a one-time code generator for your account. This is done by scanning a QR code that you will receive via the self service portal in Educloud.
- Go to the self service portal (selfservice.educloud.no)
- Under Your Personal Data, click OTP.
- Log in with Educloud username, password, and OTP or ID-porten.
- If you do not have ID-porten but need a new one-time code, contact the project administrator.
- Click Set new OTP.
- You will now see a page with a QR code.
- Open the authentication app on your mobile.
- If you have not used the app before, tap Get started.
- If you are already using the authentication app, tap the plus icon (+) in the top right corner to add a new connection/two-factor code.
- Select Other (Google, Facebook, etc.). Your mobile's camera will now open.
- Scan the QR code that appears in your browser on your PC.
- The two-factor code for Educloud will then be added to the bottom of the list in the authentication app (the name may vary).
- The authentication app generates a new one-time code every 30 seconds.
Step 4: Log in to Educloud with Omnissa Horizon
- Open Omnissa on your machine
- The first time you run the client for Educloud you need to connect to UiO's server. Click Add server
- Enter view.educloud.no into the text field in the pop up window and click Connect
- You will be asked to enter your Educloud username and one-time code. Click Login after giving your credentials
- When you have entered your username and one-time code successfully, please enter your Educloud password
- You have now successfully added (and logged in to) the Educloud server in Omnissa Horizon, and the available desktops will appear.
